Ear Candy:
ALTER TABLE ADD COLUMN ‘column_name’ int(8) NOT NULL [with no default value] -- this does not do what you would expect. You would expect that it would give you an error, because there is no default value and NULL is not allowed. What does happen is that the ALTER completes and any rows that were there before will have nulls for column_name values.
